Lane and Patty Judson didn't understand
the warning signs of domestic violence until
after their daughter Crystal was murdered,
They want everyone to know - young and old.
And they want changes. Together, they are
fulfilling Lane's promise to their daughter
that he'd do all he can so that what happened
to Crystal won't happen to others.

I
Got Flowers Today
By
Paulette Kelly
Read
by Jackie Seabrook
I
got flowers today.
It
wasn't my birthday or any other special day.
We
had our first argument last night,
And
he said a lot of cruel things that really hurt me.
I
know he is sorry and didn't mean the things he said.
Because
he sent me flowers today.
I
got flowers today.
It
wasn't our anniversary any other special day.
Last
night, he threw me into a wall and started to choke
me.
It
seemed like a nightmare.
I
couldn't believe it was real.
I
woke up this morning sore and bruised all over.
I
know he must be sorry.
Because
he sent me flowers today.
I
got flowers today,
and
it wasn't Mother's Day or any other special day.
Last
night, he beat me up again.
And
it was much worse than all the other times.
If
I leave him, what will I do?
How
will I take care of my kids?
What
about money?
I'm
afraid of him and scared to leave.
But
I know he must be sorry.
Because
he sent me flowers today.
I
got flowers today.
Today
was a very special day.
It
was the day of my funeral.
Last
night, he finally killed me.
He
beat me to death.
If
only I had gathered enough courage and strength to leave
him,
I
would not have gotten flowers...today

and Patty Judson couldn't save their daughter; she had
no brain activity and no chance for survival. They didn't
say goodbye, instead, they promised Crystal they would
see her down the road... Lane Judson spoke at the Skywarrior
Theater on July 20 to talk about the signs that, in
hindsight, forecasted a brutal end to the marriage...
"Let me reassure you that domestic violence is not a
private matter, and it is a most terrible crime that
can and will lead to death if not acted upon quickly

violence is a crime and needs to be reported if you

More
than 100 people attended the first-ever fund-raising
effort in May by supporters of I.M.Pact House, the Key
Peninsula's domestic violence shelter home. Penny Gazabat,
I.M.Pact House executive director and Key Pen resident,
said, "We asked Patty and Lane Judson to speak at the
luncheon because it is important for our community to
hear from them after the 2003 murder of their daughter,
Crystal, at the hands of her husband, former Tacoma
Police Chief David Brame. It is important for our community
to know what has happened in the wake of this tragedy
and to shed light on the need to have local domestic
violence resources available in every community." Patty
Judson shared with the audience the daughter she and
husband Lane had presented to the world, the young woman
whose life was ended by the tactics of an abuser. Silence
filled the room as she began to describe Crystal as
a vibrant, intelligent, beautiful young woman who accomplished
many goals she set for herself... Judson described David
Brame's control tactics after they married. She said
he used intimidation, isolation, humiliation, emotional
and physical abuse along with economic control... Judson's
message to the audience was to learn the "red flags
of abuse so that the people we care about can live a
life free of domestic violence." Lane Judson spoke of
his promise to his daughter the day she died of a gunshot
wound to her head. He said it "took two and a half years
to get the ‘Crystal Clear Act,' Senate Bill 6161, passed
to provide national protocols for officer-involved domestic
violence"...
